The Peter McNamara
Convenors' Award

The Peter McNamara Convenors' Award for Excellence may be given at the discretion of the convenors. This is for a particular achievement in speculative fiction or related areas in the relevant year, but may also take into account achievements by a particular person over a number of years. For example, this award may be awarded to a person for their service to the SF community in promoting and encouraging speculative fiction. The Peter McNamara Award may also be presented for areas such as:

  • a collection or anthology
  • artwork
  • an event or workshop
  • a work of non-fiction
  • a computer game
  • a body of work which brings credit and/or attention to the speculative fiction genre in that year, such as a television or film script

Nominations

Nominations are encouraged from publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, readers and members of the general public. Nominators must provide a copy of the nominated work/s to each of the judges in the relevant division/s.

Anyone may contact the Awards Coordinator (link to Contact Us page) to suggest that a work should be considered. Emailing a suggestion to the Coordinator does not constitute a valid nomination.

Nominations Deadline

Nomination forms AND copies of nominated works must be received by the relevant judges by 5:00 pm Friday, 31 October 2008 (including the Peter McNamara Award nominees).

Eligiblity

To be eligible, works must have been written by an Australian citizen or permanent resident and first published in English between 1 November 2007 and 31 October 2008. In the case of co-authored works, at least one of the authors must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. The work must meet all other eligibility criteria and be a true co-authorship (for example, Australian involvement may not be limited to illustration only).

Illustrated Works: To be eligible, illustrated works (either works for adults or children's picture books) must have been either written or illustrated by an Australian citizen or permanent resident and first published in English in the period under consideration.

Single Author Collections: To be eligible, single author collections must have been either (a) authored by an Australian citizen or permanent resident; OR (b) edited by an Australian citizen or permanent resident. This category recognises the role of editors in shaping and producing anthologies and collected works.

Anthologies: To be eligible, anthologies must have been edited by an Australian citizen or permanent resident and first published in English in the period under consideration. In the case of co-edited works, at least one of the editors must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Nomination Process

There is no fee to nominate works for the awards.

Works must be nominated in order to be considered. Nomination forms are available from the website or by contacting the Awards Coordinator.

Once completed, the nomination form is to be submitted online, emailed or posted to the Awards Coordinator. Nominators will receive acknowledgement of the nomination and a copy of the judges' addresses to submit the nominated works for consideration.

One copy of each work must be sent to EACH of the judges on the relevant panel/s. We are very happy to accept photocopies or print outs of manuscripts or galleys, providing the text is identical to that appearing the final published version. When multiple printed copies of the work/s are difficult or expensive to obtain, nominators (particularly individual authors or small presses who face financial hardship) are encouraged to contact the Awards Coordinator to discuss. It may be possible to arrange for judges to share 1-2 copies.

The Awards Coordinator and judges are under no obligation to notify nominees if works cannot be considered because they are deemed ineligible under the guidelines.

Panel convenors and judges must receive their copies of the works no later than Friday, 31 October 2008. The panel convenors will be submitting their lists of finalists' novels/short stories on Sunday, 30 November 2008; any novels/short stories received later than Friday, 31 October will not be considered for the current year's Awards.

The Awards Coordinator will announce when nominations open.

List of Nominated Works

A list of nominated works will be on the Aurealis Awards website and will be progressively updated during the year. Only nominated works will be considered for the awards.

Selecting the Best Division/Category

People who nominate works may categorise them as SF, Fantasy, Horror, YA (teen) and/or Children's (8-12 years). This information will be recorded on the list of nominated works.

People are encouraged to nominate only in relevant divisions. It would be rare, for example, for a work to be considered SF, Fantasy, Horror and YA. Please select divisions appropriately when nominating works. It is possible for a work to be a finalist and win in more than one division. If entering the work in multiple divisions, a copy must be sent to each panel member in each of the relevant divisions.

While it will be listed on the nomination form, the definition of novel and short story is left to the discretion of the judging panel of each division.

Electronic Magazines and Publications

Works published in electronic form are eligible. However, hard copy versions of the nominated works must be submitted to judges for consideration. We are very happy to accept photocopies or print outs of manuscripts or galleys, providing the text is identical to that appearing the final published version. One copy of each work must be sent to EACH of the judges on the relevant panel/s. In the case of multimedia or mixed media works, please contact the Awards Coordinator to discuss your requirements.

When multiple printed copies of the work/s are difficult or expensive to obtain, nominators (particularly individual authors or small presses who face financial hardship) are encouraged to contact the Awards Coordinator to discuss. We endeavour to do all we can to assist the nomination process. Contact the Awards Coordinator at coordinator@aurealisawards.com.

Works Published Late in the Year

If a work is released too late in the year to be considered by the panel (ie. after Friday, 31 October 2008), it will be eligible for consideration in the following year's awards. However, if one panel has considered a work eligible in a particular year, and the official date of publication as given on the copyright page is that year, this work becomes ineligible for any awards the following year. In otherwords, the same work cannot be entered in two consecutive years.

To minimise works arriving late, we recommend advance copies or page proofs of works scheduled for publication in October be sent as soon as possible to judging panels. The earlier the judges receive the work, the more time they will have to give it the consideration it deserves. Works submitted in proof form will be eligible for an award so long as one judge on the panel considering the work or the Awards Coordinator sees a final published version on or by Friday, 28 November 2008.

Small Press Publishers

The Aurealis Awards Management Committee recognises the cost of nominating multiple works in multiple categories may be burdensome to small press and independent publishers. When multiple printed copies of the work/s are difficult or expensive to obtain, nominators (particularly individual authors or small press publishers) may contact the convenor of the relevant panel/s to arrange for the judges to share copies, at the discretion of the panel convenor.

Electronic submissions are not permitted. Nominations must be submitted in hard copy to the relevant judges. You are encouraged to contact the Awards Coordinator to discuss how we can help. We endeavour to do all we can to assist the nomination process. Contact the Awards Coordinator at coordinator@aurealisawards.com.
