The Peter McNamara
Convenors' Award

The Peter McNamara Convenors' Award for Excellence may be given at the discretion of the convenors. This is for a particular achievement in speculative fiction or related areas in the relevant year, but may also take into account achievements by a particular person over a number of years. For example, this award may be awarded to a person for their service to the SF community in promoting and encouraging speculative fiction. The Peter McNamara Award may also be presented for areas such as:

  • a collection or anthology
  • artwork
  • an event or workshop
  • a work of non-fiction
  • a computer game
  • a body of work which brings credit and/or attention to the speculative fiction genre in that year, such as a television or film script

Nominations

Nominations are encouraged from publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, readers and members of the general public. Nominators must provide a copy of the nominated work/s to each of the judges in the relevant division/s.

Anyone may contact the Awards Director (link to Contact Us page) to suggest that a work should be considered. Emailing a suggestion to the director does not constitute a valid nomination.

Nominations Deadline

Nomination forms AND copies of nominated works must be received by the relevant judges by 5:00 pm Wednesday, 31 October 2007 (including the Peter McNamara Award nominees).

Eligiblity

To be eligible, works must have been written by an Australian citizen or permanent resident and first published in English between Wednesday, 15 November 2006 and Wednesday, 31 October 2007.

A novel or short story written by a judge is automatically ineligible to be nominated for an award in that period in the division for which the person is a judge. It is still eligible to be nominated in other divisions.

Nomination Process

There is no fee to nominate novels/short stories for the awards.

Works must be nominated in order to be considered. Nomination forms are available from the website or by contacting the Awards Director.

Once completed, the nomination form is to be submitted online, emailed or posted to the Awards Director. Nominators will receive acknowledgement of the nomination and a copy of the judges' addresses to submit the nominated works for consideration.

One copy of each novel/short story must be sent to EACH of the judges on the relevant panel/s. (In the case of small press publications the editor/publisher nominating the magazine/anthology in the award may contact the convenor of the relevant panel/s to arrange for the judges to share copies. This will be done at the discretion of the panel convenor).

The Awards Director and judges are under no obligation to notify nominees if works cannot be considered because they are deemed ineligible under the guidelines.

Panel convenors and judges must receive their copies of the works no later than Wednesday, 31 October 2007. The panel convenors will be submitting their lists of finalists' novels/short stories on Friday, 30 November 2007; any novels/short stories received later than Wednesday, 31 October will not be considered for the current year's Awards.

The Awards Director will announce when nominations open.

List of Nominated Works

A list of nominated works will be on the Aurealis Awards website and will be progressively updated during the year. Only nominated works will be considered for the awards.

Selecting the Best Division/Category

People who nominate works may categorise them as SF, Fantasy, Horror, YA (teen) and/or Children's (8-12 years). This information will be recorded on the list of nominated works.

People are encouraged to nominate their work in as many divisions as they feel are suitable. It is possible for a work to be a finalist and win in more than one division. If entering the work in multiple divisions, a copy must be sent to each panel member in each of the relevant divisions.

While it will be listed on the nomination form, the definition of novel and short story is left to the discretion of the judging panel of each division.

Electronic Magazines and Publications

Works published in electronic form are eligible. Wherever possible, printed copies of the nominated works should be submitted to judges for consideration. One copy of each novel/short story must be sent to EACH of the judges on the relevant panel/s.

When multiple printed copies of the work/s are difficult or expensive to obtain, nominators (particularly individual authors or small presses) may be permitted to submit electronic versions of the works. Electronic submissions may be accepted for short stories up to 7,500 words and will be at the discretion of Awards Director. Electronic versions must be the final, published text and proof of publication may be sought before an electronic submission is forwarded to judges. Contact the Awards Director at director@aurealisawards.com to request electronic submission.

Works Published Late in the Year

If a work is released too late in the year to be considered by the panel (ie. after Wednesday, 31 October 2007), it will be eligible for consideration in the following year's awards. However, if one panel has considered a work eligible in a particular year, and the official date of publication as given on the copyright page is that year, this work becomes ineligible for any awards the following year. In otherwords, the same work cannot be entered in two consecutive years.

To minimise works arriving late, we recommend advance copies or page proofs of works scheduled for publication in October be sent as soon as possible to judging panels. The earlier the judges receive the work, the more time they will have to give it the consideration it deserves. Works submitted in proof form will be eligible for an award so long as one judge on the panel considering the work or the Awards Director sees a final published version on or by the Friday, 30 November 2007.

Small Press Publishers

The Aurealis Awards Management Committee recognises the cost of nominating multiple works in multiple categories may be burdensome to small press and independent publishers. When multiple printed copies of the work/s are difficult or expensive to obtain, nominators (particularly individual authors or small press publishers) may contact the convenor of the relevant panel/s to arrange for the judges to share copies, at the discretion of the panel convenor. Alternatively, electronic submissions may be accepted for short stories up to 7,500 words and will be at the discretion of Awards Director. Electronic versions must be the final, published text and proof of publication may be sought before an electronic submission is forwarded to judges. Contact the Awards Director at director@aurealisawards.comto request electronic submission.
